The Concrete Polishing Process

Professional concrete polishing is a multi-step mechanical and chemical process. Each step builds on the last — skipping steps produces inferior results. Here's exactly how we do it.

Initial Assessment

We evaluate the existing concrete — checking hardness, surface condition, existing coatings, cracks, and joint layout. This determines the starting grit and the appropriate densifier system.

  • Identify existing coatings or sealers
  • Document cracks, spalls, and control joints

Coarse Grinding — Surface Prep

Diamond tooling removes existing coatings, levels high spots, and opens the concrete surface. We use Husqvarna PG 690 propane grinders with T8600 dust extraction — capturing 99.97% of concrete dust at the source.

  • Metal-bond diamonds: 16, 30, or 40 grit depending on surface
  • Removes paint, epoxy, adhesives, and surface laitance

Densifier Application

Ameripolish 3DHS Densifier is applied to the freshly ground surface. The silicate chemistry penetrates the concrete pores and reacts with calcium hydroxide to form calcium silicate hydrate — permanently hardening the surface.

Resin Grinding — Refinement

Resin-bond diamond pads progressively refine the surface through a sequence of grits — typically 50, 100, 200, and 400. Each pass removes the scratches from the previous grit and builds clarity and reflectivity.

Ameripolish SR2 Stain Repellent is applied to guard against oil, chemical, and water penetration. SR2 is a topical treatment that does not change the appearance of the floor — it simply makes the surface easier to maintain.

Final Polishing — High Gloss

The final polishing sequence — 800, 1500, and 3000 grit resin pads — brings the floor to its specified finish level. A cream or salt-and-pepper aggregate exposure can be dialed in based on the client's preference.

  • 800 → 1500 → 3000 grit for high-gloss finish
  • Burnishing pad for final clarity and depth
  • Finish levels: flat (400), satin (800), semi-gloss (1500), high-gloss (3000)
  • Aggregate exposure: cream, fine, medium, or full
